There are six (6) forms of government. The City of Whitefish is a Charter (PDF)form of government. A municipal charter is a voter approved written constitution that defines the powers, structures, privileges, rights and duties of the local government. Learn more about the Whitefish Charter. 

The City Council adopted Resolution No. 22-29; A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Whitefish, Montana, adopting the City Council and Committee Rules and Procedures. 

Ethics Policy

The City Council adopted Resolution No. 25-09; A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Whitefish, Montana, adopting the City of Whitefish Ethics Policy.

Members

Whitefish’s form of government consists of one Mayor, six Councilors, and a City Manager. The Mayor and Council are elected officials and appoint the City Manager. Councilors serve four years with three Councilors elected every two years and the Mayor serves four-year terms.

Goals & Priorities

Every Spring the Mayor and City Council meet with the City Manager to discuss and establish short and long term goals. These goals are important in order to prepare the annual budget and work plan for the subsequent fiscal year. The City Manager updates the Council on the progress of these goals quarterly. Letters to the Council

Letters for council review (included in the packet) need to be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office no later than 4 pm the Tuesday before the council meeting. Please submit your letter by emailing Michelle Howke, mail, or deliver the letter to the City Clerk’s Office. Letters that are received after the Council packet is produced will be copied and given to the Council the night of the meeting. To guarantee City Council receives a copy, please submit letters no later than 3:30 pm prior to the meeting.
