The 2023 Municipal Election date is November 7, 2023. Currently the Mayor, (3) three City Council members, and the Municipal Judge are up for election. Mayor Muhlfeld and Honorable Municipal Judge Overland are unopposed. Seven (7) candidates are running for three (3) City Council positions.
Also on the ballot, the City Council is proposing amendments to the City's resort tax:
To use the 3% resort tax starting February 1, 2025, as follows: (i) 25% for property tax relief; (ii) 48% for the repair, maintenance, and improvement of streets, including storm sewers, all underground utilities, sidewalks, curbs and gutters; (iii) 10% for community housing initiatives including the development of deed restricted affordable housing units and community housing programs; (iv) 10% for improvements and maintenance of bicycle and pedestrian paths and other park acquisitions, capital improvements, and equipment; (v) 2% for the maintenance and replacement of existing improvements of the Whitefish Trail with any amounts not expended within five fiscal years available for the maintenance of City bicycle and pedestrian paths; and (vi) 5% for merchants' costs of administration.
The Flathead County Election Department will mail absentee ballots to all registered voters within the city limits of Whitefish. The ballots will be mailed on October 23, 2023. If you are a registered voter and have not received your ballot, you can track your ballot on My Voter Page.
There will be a ballot box located at City Hall, from October 25, 2023 to November 7, 2023.
There are three (3) options to returning your ballot:
- A ballot box will be provided in the lobby area of City Hall from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Ballots can be dropped off in the Utility Payment Box after hours, located in the vestibule at the Baker Avenue Entrance.
- Mail to the Flathead County Election Department in the return envelope that is provided with your ballot. It is important to follow the instructions that are included in the envelope.
- The Postal Service Recommends you mail your ballot at least one week before the Election Day. (Note: $0.60 postage is required)
- Drop off your ballot at the Flathead County Election Office

If you are not a registered voter, and/or will not be in town on November 7, 2023, you can vote in-person at the Flathead County Election Department, at the address located above, during business hours.
