Whitefish Municipal Court is a court of record that maintains a regulated court docket. The Court is open to the public with personal appearances required by both defendants and attorneys. 

The Court follows the same holiday schedule as City Hall. Please check the City's calendar for more information on closures.

Court Mission

Whitefish Municipal Court is an independent branch of government constitutionally entrusted with the fair resolution of disputes in an independent forum. The Court's mission is to preserve the rule of law and to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and the State of Montana.

What the Court Handles

Whitefish Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction, and has jurisdiction to adjudicate misdemeanor traffic violations including parking offenses, misdemeanor criminal offenses, city ordinance violations, and certain other offenses, such as municipal infractions.

Whitefish Municipal Court administers the following within the city limits of Whitefish:

  • Criminal Misdemeanors, State Laws, Traffic Offenses
  • Whitefish City Code Ordinance Violations
  • Municipal Infractions

  • We CANNOT give you legal advice.
  • We CANNOT explain judicial decisions, let you speak to the judge outside of the courtroom or talk to the judge for you about what will happen in your case.
  • We CANNOT refer you to specific lawyers, contact programs or lawyers for you, or give you answers to questions about lawyers that involve legal advice.
  • We CANNOT tell you how court rules and procedures will be applied in your case.
  • We CANNOT interpret legal terms for you.
  • We CANNOT tell you which legal procedures apply in your case, or how they will affect the outcome of your case.
  • We CANNOT find state laws, regulations, court rules or local ordinances for you, or tell you how they apply to the facts in your case.
  • We CANNOT give you confidential case information.
  • We CANNOT fill out forms for you unless you have a disability that prevents you from filling them out on your own.
  • We CANNOT change an order issued by a judge.
